GNU SYSTEM LINUX

Gnu system Linux, as Richard Stallman holds to specify , creator, ideologist and founder of Free Software Foundation, he asserts that it isn’t right to close a program, denying the freedom to modify, to check, to distribute and to interact in full thoroughness with the same one, Gnu other than being a collection of free software is mainly an ideology, it is anti the property by default, it is absolute freedom in the exchange of the information, or better, as Richard has said these are the three freedoms of the software:

Freedom of utilization

Freedom of modification

Freedom of distribution

These aren’t affirmations that give little, that upsets the logic of who completely wants to manage to its pleasure the increase of the persons, controlling the distribution of the information, and consequently controlling who uses them. Saying this way can seem abstract, but think well on it…

Richard Stallman believes a lot in personal ethics, he prefers an exchange of information rather than simple I sell you buy.
I make some examples using a bit of irony, in order to make that everyone can get its own conclusions. My personal opinions are based directly from The GNU’ Manifesto, and from what I have learned from Richard’s words on the meeting in Rome on 5 december 1997.

Here the speech is complicated, when the utilization of the computer was of the elite few, difficultly the programs were closed in order to avoid manipulations, also because there still did not exist reliable programs to 100% (now they exist?). A program could be copied and installed on various machines, thus everyone could use and, to his discretion, modify it, if there were difficulties on right functionality, and once the problem was resolved the information would have been passed on. Who uses Internet for a long time knows of the importance in the exchange of information, and there exist not written rules or so, which are respected, not for fear but for simple personal ethics.

You have perhaps thought that I’m crazy? Maybe you aren’t wrong, but at least I’m not the only one, Richard Stallman is an uncomfortable personage, he makes fear, many years ago everyone pointed out to hime like crazy, because he was predicting the free software, not necessarily free, all of this exist today, in remarkable amount and of quality, and maybe the greater part of the persons has found his programs, many of the Unix machines and those called Linux being on Internet which offer services of many kinds have GNU software or made with it.

What is GNU?

GNU, which is Gnu’s Not Unix(Gnu isn’t Unix), is the name of the operating system and Unix-compatible which was written to be freely distributable to whoever can use it. GNU can run Unix software, but it isn’t identical to Unix. With passing of the time it is improved on the base of the experiences matured with other operating systems. In particular the plan heads to having one fluid vision of the evolution of computer science, with a file system anti crash, with independent support from the terminal for the visualization and with a visual system, through which more Lisp programs and ordinary programs can share the screen. GNU is mainly oriented to the machines with virtual memory, because they are those where it is easier make it run. The ulterior effort for making it run on other smaller machines will be left to who will want use it on said machines.

The intention is that nobody must pay for the permission to use the GNU system. But the words do not express clearly this concept, and the persons interpret this assertion like that GNU must always be distributed in free shape. But in truth the attempt never has been this, beyond The Manifesto it is spoken about the possible existence of companies that supply the service of distribution for money. FREE in english has many meanings, while luckily for us in Italian language two adjectives exist, consequently I have learned to distinguish between “free” as freedom and “free” as free of charge. The free software is the software that the customers are free to distribute and to modify. Some will have it free of charge, others will have to pay in order to obtain their copies, and if money helps to improve the software much better. The important thing is that anyone that has a copy is free to cooperate with others in the use of it.

Now I will try to explain what we mean for Free Software, carrying like example a written text, instead of a program. You’re reading this page, it is presupposed that you know the operation of a computer, that stupid box full of circuits that you have there, but imagine a book that contains many pages full of useful information. An advice, do not continue with the reading, less that you want to begin to question yourself:

To read a book is a crime?

Sure it is not a crime to read the book in itself, but if you begin to add some note, widening therefore the opinions or the knowledge of the writer, what happens?

To write notes is a crime?

To modify a text is not a crime, until everyone holds the own opinions for himself, who knows how many persons while studying have written notes on the books, in order to only make the information more assimilable, and if a friend succeeds to learn more quickly reading also to yours notes?

To make a copy is a crime?

And thus, you do not have the money to buy a book, remain in your ignorance, because the book is of property of the author, and if then it has been modified with some note, scattered here and there, you merit being put to the ban, what do you do, you argue on the ideas and logic of others?

To give a book is crime?

At least this let it be done, but the will to rewrite all the notes goes away, and thus the best thing is to give a new book, and all your knowledge will be lost?

QUESTIONS ABOUT LINUX

This article responds to many common questions and objections related to Linux, including:

What is Linux?
Why would I want an operating system developed by one guy?
But isn’t Linux for large computers?
Isn’t Linux hard?
Windows crashes, does Linux?
But no one I know uses Linux!
But there is no support for Linux.
But there are no big companies behind Linux.
Don’t I need to be a computer guru to use Linux?
Why is Linux catching on so fast?
But Linux doesn’t have applications!
What’s with the penguin?

And we really thank Linux Mall for their ongoing efforts making Linux understandable by more people…

What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system, the software that allows computer hardware to run and serve the computer applications you love to use. It is like Unix; actually “Unix the Next Generation” would be a good way to put it. It is a direct replacement for MS Windows, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT, or any other operating system for that matter. It does things that Microsoft has been talking about for years, but still has not delivered. It is stable in a way that no Microsoft software is. Years ago, Bill Gates made the statement “Windows NT will be a better Unix than Unix.” We retorted almost immediately, “Why wait? Linux already is.” And it has only gotten better. While Microsoft makes promises and spends money on ads, Linux delivers. Linux in some areas is still a little harder to use than equivalent Microsoft products, but it is catching up fast, and well worth learning because it is much more flexible.

Why would I want an operating system developed by one guy?

Actually it wasn’t. Rather, tens of thousands of the best computer minds in the world developed it over decades. And millions alpha test, beta test and report problems to the developers directly. While many people think that Linus Torvalds, whose image recently graced the cover of Forbes magazine, must be a god to have developed Linux, and rich beyond belief, they are profoundly wrong. Linus did not invent or create the entire operating system known by many as Linux. He is a nice guy who wanted to share a fairly minor Unix-like program that he developed, which caught on and became the kernel, the central traffic switch for Linux. Then after others began using it a friend of Linus’ dubbed his program, “Linux,” for “Linus’ Unix”. modelled. Since then hundreds have worked on the kernel, and thousands on the greater operating system that took on the name of the kernel. Much of what is now known as Linux existed in the Unix world as much as a decade or more before Linus came on the scene. He was the right man with the right skills, the right motivations, and the right personality, appearing at the right time.

Linus continues to be the leader of the kernel project, and the de-facto leader of the Linux movement, which now involves tens of thousands of developers, all cooperating in a way that results in every component of Linux being as good as it possibly can be. It might even be a new Internet enabled kinder, gentler form of government [what?] that can extend outside Linux itself. It is truly a paradigm shift worth learning about.

But isn’t Linux for large computers?

This used to be true of Unix, but PC hardware today is more powerful than the “big” computers of the past (the past being as recent as three years ago). Linux runs on everything from the 3Com Palm Pilot to parallel supercomputers. The famous water scenes from Titanic were rendered using a massively parallel Linux supercomputer, made up of many Digital Alpha processor based PCs because no other operating system could handle the task within budgetary constraints. Ten of the commercials during the 1998 Superbowl (the first one the Broncos ever won) were rendered using Linux. Visible enough for you?

Linux is very personal, and very scalable in a way that corporations have been dreaming of. One consistent, capable and modular operating system from the smallest devices to the largest computing systems… wow!

Isn’t Linux HARD?

Well, some people think so. But then some people think DOS is hard too. Linux can actually be easier to install and use than Microsoft Windows is. Many make the mistake of judging Linux by its installation, rather than daily use. Isn’t daily use what one does most often?

Windows crashes, does Linux?

Like the Energizer bunny, it runs and runs and runs. It is a shame that Microsoft has taught people to accept crashing computers and loss of work. It is not the PC hardware doing this, but rather the Microsoft “technology”. There are people that have reported even early versions of Linux running for more than 3 years now without ever stopping.

But no one I know uses Linux!

Although it is possible that this is true, we doubt it. Ask around, see how many people use or know of Linux. In France Linux outsells Windows 98, and it is looking like it may be true in the USA too, but we do not yet have enough evidence to tell for sure. A European automated Internet survey looks for machines online and asks what operating system they use; that survey finds that the majority are Linux systems. Every school and company we know of uses Linux for something. We have spent time in Linux Mall’s customer files, and it looks like there is NO company in the “Fortune 2000″ that has not bought Linux and Linux related products from LinuxMall already.

But there is no support for Linux.

Balderdash. There are Linux user groups that you can attend in nearly every community, consultants all over the world, companies that you can call for telephone support, and there is the free support available in so many places on the Internet. Companies can even buy support contracts from many reputable sources.

But there are no big companies behind Linux.

Netscape and Intel just invested in Red Hat. IBM just announced support for Apache, the default web server in Linux. Compaq is involved; Dell has made announcements about Linux, Oracle, Corel, Sybase, Informix, etc. Are these not big enough for you?

Don’t I need to be a computer guru to use Linux?

No. There are things you may want to learn, or ask a friend to help you with, just like Windows. Once it is set up it is as easy to use as any other operating system. And it does use a GUI (Graphical User Interface). You can even buy computers pre-loaded with Linux, so you do not have to set it up yourself!

So why is Linux catching on so fast?

Linux has a technical superiority that Microsoft just cannot match. All of Microsoft’s money cannot buy them a development team as large or as capable as the team working on Linux. Linux is a new paradigm doing to Microsoft’s current paradigm as Microsoft did to IBM’s about a decade or so ago, and for the same reasons. For more information on this, see the article “Why Linux is Significant” http://www.LinuxMall.com/Allann/lxsig.txt written in 1994. The predictions our CEO made in this article have been occurring right on schedule, and this article is as relevant now as it was then. Also see http://www.LinuxMall.com/announce/netscape.html for a number of resources that will help you understand what is happening and why. In fact, if you go through all the news archives on http://www.LinuxMall.com you will see that we have consistently commented on future events which actually came to pass not too long later. First we wrote about it, then the mainstream press caught on. Get used to it, there is more to come. Predictions are not hard to make when you understand the underlying motivations that cause the changes.

But Linux doesn’t have applications!

Oh yes it does. See the ads and product pages on this web site for many choices, with new ones being added all the time. If the particular application or game you want is not available, then you won’t have to look far for another that does the same thing. All major software vendors have ported, are porting, or are considering porting their products to Linux. This includes Oracle, Sybase, Corel (including WordPerfect and the whole suite), Netscape, Informix, Quake, Doom, StarOffice, and many more than we can possibly mention here. Even Microsoft has ported some of its products and more are coming.

While Linux does not directly run the applications for Microsoft Windows, there are several things that you can do.

  1. Set up the computer as a dual-boot system, and switch between Linux and Windows by rebooting; Linux includes the tools needed to set this up.
  2. Use Wabi, a product that runs Windows 3.1 or older applications on Linux, or WINE, a Windows 95/98 emulator that actually runs the software faster than it would on Windows alone. While WINE is not yet finished (a work in progress), some things run, including Quicken.
  3. Set up a network with Linux as a server and Windows machines attached. The Windows boxes literally think that Linux is a peer or an NT box when this is done. The Windows boxes run Windows software, while the Linux box runs Linux software (displaying on the Windows boxes if desired) and also functions as the network server, fileserver, Internet gateway and firewall. Neat!
  4. Ask the manufacturer of the software you need if there is a port available.
  5. Look for an equivalent product that already is available for Linux and is able to read the files that your existing Windows application uses. For example, StarOffice and Applixware are both complete office suites that can read and write Microsoft Office files. Linux WordPerfect can read and write Windows WordPerfect files, etc.
  6. Enjoy the freedom of not crashing and rebooting.

What’s with the Penguin?

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

The main functions attributed to the external relations are: the contribution to the definition of the problems, carrying to the inside of the enterprise an appraisal of outside ambient, of the opinions and the judgments with which this will have to confront, and the support to the attainment of the company goals through the activation of a system of open and coordinated relations.

To the external relations it comes therefore attributed to a role of great responsibility and strategic print for the enterprise, even if there isn’t the direct participation in the definition of the objectives and the total politics of the enterprise.

Plans and projects of communication

The planning techniques, the operations research, the communication instruments, have their importance and acquire their single validity if supported by a valid planning and designing.

The communication plan consists in a document in which the distances of communication advised by the professional are indicated in order to catch up the goals expressed from the client.

These the elements that must be taken in consideration for a complete plan of communication: the goals that are wanted to be caught up; the positioning that is wanted to be attributed to the product or the enterprise; the target to which it is wanted to be communicated; plus there is the technical, commercial or emotional connotation.

The quality, the price or other in a position of rendering, to the eyes of the consumer, a more desirable product regarding the competition; reason why the consumer must choose that product rather than an other; and, finally an advance on the contents and the tone of the communication.

Strategies of communication

The communication strategy is the realization of the plan, the true and own operating phase, the moment in which the plan comes realized.

The goal is to define with accuracy ties, the activities, the instruments of communication, the resources to employ and the times in order to execute the plan in correct way.

Moreover it has the task to supply to the client a reliable instrument on which being able to take one operating decision of expense.

Press Releases

And sure the timelier means for the enterprise for constantly being dawned on the events, of which the press gives news, and that they can be involved directly or indirectly to the same enterprise.

The Press Releases can be realized on paper support is multimedia is for via data transmission.
